My Top Pet Peeves in Leadership

Iโ€™ve spent years working with teams and leaders to build authentic and high-performing cultures. Over time, Iโ€™ve come to realize that certain leadership behaviors drive me crazy.ย ๐Ÿซ

If your team doesnโ€™t know where theyโ€™re headed or why decisions are being made, itโ€™s hard for them to fully engage. Transparency and clear communication are vital for aligning everyone around a shared vision and goal. Keeping things hidden doesnโ€™t build trust; it breeds confusion and damages performance in the long term.

Leadership is about influence, not authority. Your position and role do matter a lot, but authentic leadership is about respect, guidance, and empowerment, not just commanding orders. When leaders rely solely on their title or power, they miss the opportunity to inspire and develop their people, which in turn provides strong loyalty, inspires creativity, and shapes long-lasting results.

When leaders donโ€™t invest in their teamโ€™s growth, they miss a critical opportunity to create high-performing teams. In my personal definition, a high-performing team is one that can improve constantly and consistently upgrade its capability and skill set. When people tend to “hire” talent rather than develop and grow it, it kills the core backbone of the high-performing team, in my opinion.

Leaders who donโ€™t listen to feedback or dismiss it miss out on important insights that could drive success and help the organization grow. Not all feedback is valuable, but you will miss 20% of the most meaningful one if you get into the mindset of usually dismissing it all. It creates a closed mindset, and youโ€™ll no longer be able to identify whatโ€™s worth your attention.

Your actions should reflect your values. When thereโ€™s a disconnect between what leaders say and what they do, it erodes trust and creates a toxic culture. Authentic leadership means being consistent, not just in words, but in actions too.

As a leader and coach, I believe these are not just frustrations โ€“ theyโ€™re missed opportunities to grow, inspire, and create environments where people can thrive.

The good news is that everything can be changed. And the first step is awareness. When we start listening to feedback (4) and humbly admit that our authority is not enough to truly make an impact and lead people (2), we can start fixing our communication (1) and help our people develop internally, providing them with opportunities and your guidance (3). We should constantly check in with our values (5) to ensure what we translate to the world and what we truly stand for are in alignment.

  1. Great insights! Poor communication and ignoring feedback definitely hit home. Leadership isnโ€™t about controlโ€”itโ€™s about connection, growth, and trust. Metamorphosis coaching aligns perfectly with this kind of mindful leadership.
