Mental barriers often block us from pursuing our true wishes, desires, and goals. Sometimes, they even block us from listening to our own basic needs. Simply put, a mental barrier is a limiting belief or assumption that we have about ourselves in regard to our ability, potential, and self-worth.
So how can we work with mental barriers? By replacing ‘I know I can’t do it’ with ‘Perhaps I can,’ we can remove these inner obstacles and unleash the positive energy and confidence, which will help us move on towards our goals. 🚀
Start by listing down 5 things you believe you can’t do and make a brief note of the reasons why you believe you cannot do it. Then, rewrite the list, substituting negative statements with positive ones. For example: ‘I cannot ask my boss about a promotion, because I haven’t even worked in the company for 3 years yet’ will become ‘I can ask my boss about a promotion, because I feel I have the potential to bring more value in another role, and even when he doesn’t respond now, I may know where I stand in his eyes with my performance.’
Now, take a moment to read your new list with the positive statements. Read each of the positive statements out loud, take it in, and start believing in what you wrote there. How does it make you feel? 😊
